About Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome

The IT band is a thick band of fibers that stretches from the pelvis to the tibia (shinbone) and attaches to the muscles of the hip and upper leg. The band helps with muscle activity and stability. Inflammation of the IT band can cause pain and irritation, particularly in and around the knee and hip. These symptoms are typically most noticeable while walking and running.

Diagnosing IT Band Syndrome

IT band syndrome is usually caused by overuse or tightness of the IT band. Structural abnormalities in the leg, such as bow legs, and poor flexibility, can increase the likelihood of developing IT band syndrome. Most notice soreness or pain along the outside of the hip and/or knee.  This is often worse with increased activity and occasionally sleeping on the affected side.

Treatment Options

IT band syndrome can often be treated at home with rest, ice, and over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen. Therapy to stretch this structure is also effective, but it will occasionally require surgical lengthening in a small subset of patients.

If symptoms continue despite rest and treatment, consult with a doctor for further evaluation and treatment options.
